General Introduction on UK Boarding School

Boarding schools are residential private schools where students stay in the school throughout the academic year. Their main goal is to provide a learning community where students can concentrate on their studies, mature and reach their full potential.

In the United Kingdom, there are around 500 boarding schools throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They are fully in charge of their students throughout term-time, providing them with the best pastoral care. Many independent boarding schools teach their own original ethos — including social aspirations, manners and accents — associated with their own school traditions. They also offer sports, musical, and art facilities. UK boarding schools are a unique concept with international appeal.
Most boarding schools in England teach a mix of local and international students, and the boarding school system in the UK usually offers co-educational education. Although classes will be mixed, it is almost always the case that boarders will be housed in single-sex residences.
There are two main types of boarding schools in England: independent boarding schools (also known as private or public boarding schools) and state boarding schools. The main difference is state boarding schools are only open to British citizens, EU passport holders and people with the right of residence in the UK, while independent boarding schools charge for enrolment. However, all boarding schools in the UK will charge a fee for accommodation and catering provisions.
