Canada is recognised as one of the most pleasant and friendly countries in the world. It has also become a top study destination among students across the globe. If you are interested in travelling there to further your studies, below are 30 fun facts about Canada that will leave you captivated.
1. Canada has 2 official languages: English and French.
2. Canada is the world’s second largest country at 9.98 million square miles. Additionally, Canada’s national parks are bigger than most countries; for example, Nahanni National Park Reserve (30,050 sq. km) and Wood Buffalo National Park (44,807 sq. km).
3. Canadian police will give out “positive tickets” when they see people doing positive things, such as picking up rubbish or wearing a bike helmet.
4. Canada is the number one donut consumer in the world, eating 1 billion donuts annually.
5. Canadians also eat more Mac and Cheese than any other nation (they call it Kraft Dinner).
6. Winnie the Pooh was inspired by a bear from Winnipeg Zoo in Canada.
7. It is illegal to kill a sasquatch or “BigFoot” in Canada; sasquatches are legally protected by the Canadian law.
8. Canada’s lowest recorded temperature is as cold as Mars; a temperature of -63 C was recorded in the small village of Snag on February 3, 1947.
9. Canada’s Immigration Minister declared that Santa Clause was a Canadian citizen; you can even contact Santa in Canada using the address: Santa Clause, North Pole, HOH OHO Canada and there are people in Canada who reply to each letter.
10. Canadians put their milks in bags; nope not in a carton of bottle, a bag.
11. You may weigh less in Canada; large parts of Canada have less gravity than the rest of the Earth.
12. Smelling bad could put you in jail; it’s true, there’s a law stating this.
13. Canada is home to many famous celebrities including: Justin Bieber, Drake, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Mendes, Avril Lavigne, Ryan Gosling, The Weeknd and Michael Bublé.
14. In case you didn’t know, Canada produces 80% of the world’s maple syrup.
15. The stereotype that Canadians apologize a lot is true; there is even a law in relation to “apologizing”.

20. Canada is the polar bear capital of the world; the best place to see on is in Churchill. What’s more, there is a polar bear jail in Churchill for badly behaved polar bears who spend too much time in the town of Churchill or close by.
21. It also has the world’s longest coastline: 202,080km. It would take you 4.5 years to walk the length of it.
22. Canada’s national animal is the beaver.
23. The name “Canada” was formed through a misunderstanding; a French explorer met with local natives who invited him to their “Kanata”, which means village. The explorer and his group thought that “Kanata” or “Canada” was the name of the entire country.
24. Toronto has the world’s biggest underground shopping complex. It’s called the PATH and comprises 4 million square feet of retail space; forget cardio, just shop at the PATH!
25. Canada is home to 10% of the world’s forests; 396.9-million hectares of forest and other wooded land can be found across the country.
26. Quebec is the only walled-city in North America; the walls were built in the 17th century when British forces captured the city. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
27. Canada has the most lakes in the world; it is estimated there are 1-2 million lakes in Canada. Additionally, Canada’s lakes hold about 20% of the world’s freshwater.
28. Canada has the longest skating rink in the world (located in Winnipeg).
29. Basketball was invented by a Canadian (Dr. James Naismith).
30. The world’s oldest pool of water is located in a Canadian mine; scientists discovered it dates back 2 billion years ago.
