Delicious food, iconic tourist sites, elite academic institutions…if you ever have the opportunity to pursue your studies in the United States, my advice is to not let it slip through your hands. America is by far the most famous country in the world, noted for its tech innovation, sports and massive impact on global culture due to the country’s monumental influence in TV, music and media. To further arouse your interest in this sensational country, below are 25 fun facts about the United States of America.

1. The United States is home to thousands of the best and most popular musical artists; studying there could be your opportunity to watch your favourite artists live in concerts!

2. There have been 27 versions of the American flag; each new flag represented the addition of new states.

3. Adding on to fact number 3, the current 50-star American flag was designed by a 17-year-old boy as part of his school project.

4. Some of the most iconic American food include: corn dogs, cheeseburgers, PB&J sandwiches, s’mores, BBQ ribs and more.

5. Another food fact: 100 acres of pizza are consumed every day in the US, with around 300 billion pizzas sold per year.

6. America is home to many natural wonders and UNESCO world heritage sites. A few of these include: the Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park and Yosemite National Park (fyi, it’s pronounced yo-see-me-tee).

7. The Statue of Liberty, formally known as “Liberty Enlightening the World”, was a gift from France to celebrate 100 years of Franco-American friendship.

8. Additionally, the Statue of Liberty isn’t in New York like most people think it is. It is actually located in Jersey City, New Jersey.

9. There is a tiny town in Alaska that lives under one roof; yes, 220 people living in one building, because who needs privacy right?

10. Although English is predominantly spoken in the US, the country has no official language.

11. Abraham Lincoln used to be a wrestler; he won 299 out of the 300 competitions he participated in and later on went to win his county’s wrestling championship (all this was before he became president).

12. Hawaii is also known as the “Rainbow State”, as rainbows are very often spotted everywhere within the state.

13. There is a palace made entirely out of corn in South Dakota, called Mitchell’s Corn Palace.

14. With a GDP of about 24 trillion US dollars, the United States has the largest economy in the world.

15. There is a city named “Boring” in Oregon, which is home to around 7,000 people.

16. The US is home to the Four Corners Monument, a point where the south-eastern corners of Utah and Colorado meet the north-eastern corners of New Mexico and Arizona. Standing at this point means you are standing in 4 states at the same time.

17. Kentucky produces about 95% of the world’s bourbon (whiskey). In fact, there is more bourbon than people in Kentucky! (4.8 million barrels of bourbon)

18. The Missouri River is one of the longest river systems in the world, stretching a total of 3,700 kilometres.

19. Kansas could singlehandedly feed the entire world for 2 weeks with 1 year’s worth of wheat that it produces.

20. There is a town in Nebraska, called Monowi, that only has one person. The town’s single resident is 83-year-old Elsie Eiler.

21. There are more cows than humans in some US states, these include: Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming.

22. The Empire State Building has its own zip code: 10188.

23. You can get a unicorn-hunting license in Michigan; no, I’m not kidding.

24. Before Washington, DC became the capital of America, New York City served as the nation’s capital.

25. There is a shop inside a dinosaur’s tummy! The Dinosaurs of Cabazon were originally created to attract customers into a restaurant, but has now become a tourist site in itself.
